Tucked into the alpine far north of Italy, the Valle d'Aosta makes some of the country's most distinctive Nebbiolo—here called Picotendro. The Caves Coopératives de Donnas, founded in 1971, farm dramatic terraced vineyards on steep mountain slopes, and this 'Vieilles Vignes' Superiore comes from old vines, mostly Nebbiolo with a touch of Fumin, aged two years in large oak casks. It's a leaner, more mountain-fresh take on Nebbiolo than its famous Piedmont cousins. The 2008 now carries real bottle age—a back-vintage bottle from a private cellar, drinking in its mature, savory window.
