The 2023 vintage benefited from a cool spring, plentiful rainfall, and a warm but not excessive summer—ideal conditions for the long, slow ripening that builds complexity in Cabernet. Caymus sourced from Coombsville, Calistoga, and the valley floor, using fruit from cooler pockets to add structure and freshness while valley-floor fruit delivers the lush texture Caymus is renowned for. The cool 2023 season allowed extended hang time, resulting in refined tannin structure and layered flavor development. This is opulent Cabernet made with the discipline of a cool vintage.

More about Caymus Vineyards

Few names say "Napa Cabernet" faster than Caymus. The Wagner family's house style is unabashedly generous: dark, ripe and plush, with soft tannins that make the wines easy to enjoy young.

The family's Napa roots go back generations; Charlie Wagner bought 73 acres in Rutherford in 1941 and spent years selling grapes to wineries like Inglenook. In 1972 he, his wife Lorna and their son Chuck decided to bottle their own, naming the winery after the old Rancho Caymus land grant. Chuck has been the driving force since the 1980s, and the family's portfolio has since grown to include labels like Conundrum, Mer Soleil and Belle Glos.

The signature is long hang time for full ripeness, with fruit drawn from vineyards across several Napa sub-appellations. The flagship is Special Selection, first made in 1975 from the best lots of the year and given extended barrel aging. Mature bottles of Special Selection are a fine way to see how this ripe style develops with time.
