A piece of Barolo history. Bruno and Marcello Ceretto purchased their six hectares of Brunate in La Morra in 1970, and the late 1970s saw them begin vinifying the cru separately as one of the pioneering single-vineyard Barolos of the modern era. The label reads Vigneto Zonchetta, the specific Ceretto parcel within the legendary Brunate hill. And 1978 happens to be one of the twentieth century's greatest Piedmont vintages, a classical year that has produced famously long-lived Barolos. Forty-seven years on, this is a museum piece — fully mature, fragile in the most beautiful way, with all the tertiary perfume that legendary old Nebbiolo develops. Open with reverence, carafe briefly, and pour slowly. (Producer is Ceretto with one R, despite the label's spelling.)

Antonio Galloni

"I was blown away by Ceretto's 1978 Barolo Brunate Vigneto Zonchetta. I have had great experiences with the estate's top wines in this vintage, but I honestly wasn't prepared for the quality of what was in the glass in the Zonchetta, the entry-level Barolo that today is rarely inspiring, to say the least. A picture of grace and elegance, it revealed layers of ethereal dark fruit and spices intermingled with balsamic notes. This feminine, delicate Barolo was by no means profound, but it did show incredible balance and a gorgeous sense of inner harmony. I am tempted to say that Ceretto has rarely matched the heights they reached in 1978." —Antonio Galloni

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Don't compete. A simple risotto with white truffle if the season is right, otherwise butter-and-sage tajarin, or aged Parmigiano on its own. Let the wine speak.

Tasting Profile

Faded rose, dried cherry, antique leather, sweet tobacco, cocoa, and forest floor. Ethereal on the palate, tannins long dissolved, with a haunting, savory, multi-layered finish that lingers.
