The Chalmers family has been instrumental in bringing Italy’s native grapes to Australian soil, and their 2021 Nero d’Avola is one of the clearest examples of that success. Grown in the red Cambrian soils of Heathcote, this is Nero reimagined—vibrant, medium-bodied, and more about lift and spice than weight or ripeness.

Fermented with native yeasts and aged mostly in neutral vessels, the wine leads with juicy red cherry and plum, followed by notes of crushed thyme, black tea, and a touch of earth. There’s great freshness here—an easy balance of acidity and soft tannin that makes it ideal for everything from charcuterie to grilled eggplant. It’s unfussy but thoughtful, with just enough wildness to keep things interesting.

This is not a heavy southern Italian red—it’s an Aussie-grown original with Mediterranean bones and new-world energy. Chill it slightly, pour generously, and let it do its thing.

Robert Parker

92 points

"Grown on a combination of basalt, shale, sandstone, dolerite, quartz and limestone, this 2021 Nero d'Avola is every bit as inappropriately luminescent as I was hoping. “Inappropriate” because as adults we are trained to favor savoriness and complexity, and this is sweet, guilty and pure. It is so pretty and bright that it's almost not for adults. Full of wild summer raspberry, redskin lollies, pomegranate juice and black cherries, this is awesome. Nero does well in Australia, and we are seeing more and more of it. This is delicious, but it will not be for everyone, thanks to its luminous fruit." —Robert Parker
