Les Couarres is a 100% Pinot Noir Champagne from a single lieu-dit in Merfy, grown on clay-rich soils over chalk. This combination gives the wine both grip and finesse. Alexandre Chartogne vinifies with a Burgundian mindset—barrel fermentation, no malolactic, low dosage—and the result is Champagne that feels more like fine wine with bubbles than bubbly with finesse.

The 2020 vintage brings real clarity and structure: aromas of red apple skin, crushed stones, hazelnut, and faint wild herbs lead into a broad, mouth-filling palate with firm acidity and mineral tension. There’s a savory depth here—a slightly oxidative edge—that gives the wine gravitas, but without sacrificing freshness.

This is a Champagne for the dinner table as much as the apéritif—amazing with game birds, mushrooms, aged cheeses, or richer seafood. Like all of Chartogne’s single-vineyard wines, Les Couarres is a direct transmission from vineyard to glass.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 93
"The 2020 Extra-Brut Les Couarres is redolent of dried citrus peel, chamomile, tangerine oil, spice and crushed rocks. Brisk acids and bracing mineral notes drive through the mid-palate and finish. The blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir works so well. This is another wine in the range that needs time. A high percentage of clay yields a Champagne with soft contours." -Antonio Galloni

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
