Premier Grand Cru Classe Saint-Emilion from the celebrated 2009 vintage, one of the great modern Bordeaux years. Beau-Sejour Becot sits on the Saint-Martin de Mazerat limestone plateau just west of the town — the estate's Premier Grand Cru Classe status was restored in 1996 — and the house style is a Merlot-dominant blend rounded out with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented whole-berry in cement. The Becot family has farmed here since buying the property in 1969, and the current generation is Juliette Becot and Julien Barthe, in charge since 2014. Fun fact: vines have grown on this ground since Roman times, the monks of St. Martin Abbey tended it in the Middle Ages, and General Jacques de Carles gave it the name "Beau-Sejour" — "lovely stay" — in 1787. For classified right-bank claret from a benchmark year, this is about as honest a proposition as the appellation offers. Decant it.
