A mature Pomerol from the estate's most talked-about era, with more than a quarter century in bottle. The 1998 falls squarely within the Arcaute/Rolland years at Clinet — late harvests, ripe Merlot and an unapologetically generous hand with new oak, the regime that stayed in force right through the 1990s. The raw material is about as good as Pomerol gets: Clinet sits at the highest point of the plateau, on the Günz gravel terrace, with clay soils, a thick gravel layer and an iron-rich subsoil — the combination that makes Pomerol Pomerol. At the heart of it is La Grand Vigne, the prized old-vine Merlot plot beside the village church. This is also the bottling from the turn of ownership, as the Laborde family took over the property at the end of the 1990s. Buy it for what old Right Bank Merlot becomes rather than for youthful fruit: open it carefully, decant gently, and give it the evening it deserves.
