Under the stewardship of Stephan von Neipperg since 1991, Clos de l'Oratoire has become a benchmark Right Bank producer. The 2005 vintage—90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc from clay-limestone terroir—was aged 18 months in 80% new oak. The wine marries the softness and richness Merlot provides with the structure and complexity of the vintage. Rich and seamless, it ranks among the estate's finest expressions and has reached peak maturity, though it will continue gracefully evolving. Drink through 2025 for optimal pleasure.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2005 Clos de L'Oratoire is a huge, bombastic wine. Its concentration and depth are impressive, to be sure. But I find the 2005 monolithic, heavy and one-dimensional. Copious new oak, espresso, blackberry jam and dried herbs are all amplified in this decidedly hedonistic Saint-Émilion. Some readers will surely appreciate this style more than I do, but I find it hard to get too excited about the 2005, although I must add that the wine showed well, even after having been opened more than 24 hours." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"From the Comte von Neipperg, his wines from this over-achieving estate always deliver an aromatic fireworks display of cedar wood, Christmas fruitcake, roasted herbs, black olive, cassis and sweet kirsch. The 2005 has all that as well as ripe, well-integrated, velvety tannin, and full body in a sexy, luscious, heady style to drink now and over the next 10-15 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

93 points

"This is exotic, with mushroom, blackberry and meat aromas. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and lots of decadent fruit character. Long and beautiful. The best from this estate since 1990."

Wine Enthusiast

"Barrel sample. Very ripe but dry and brooding, this shows potential greatness, but is even more of a baby than most en primeur samples. There are dark fruits, but it's all shrouded in mystery."
