Cos d'Estournel is the great estate of Saint-Estephe, the northernmost commune of the Medoc, instantly recognizable by its fantastical pagoda-topped chateau built by a 19th-century owner obsessed with the spice trade. A Second Growth, Cos blends the firm structure typical of Saint-Estephe with an unusually high proportion of Merlot for a left-bank wine, giving it richness alongside its backbone. The 2001 came in the shadow of the heralded 2000, which makes it a connoisseur's pick: a classically proportioned, fully mature vintage that drinks beautifully now without the wait. This is Bordeaux at its most resolved, all tertiary complexity and balance.
