If you want to understand why people fall for Pauillac, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the wine to pour, and the estate itself calls the 2001 "a very typical Pauillac" and a fine expression of its terroir. That terroir is very deep, coarse gravel on the Grand-Puy plateau, just west of the village of Pauillac on the left bank of the Gironde, with the vines planted in a single block around the château. The 2001 is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, harvested between 1 and 14 October. The Borie family bought the estate in 1978, and François-Xavier Borie set out to revive a "sleeping beauty." He replanted where needed, improved the drainage, and moved into the run-down château with his wife Marie-Hélène to restore it. One piece of trivia we love: unusually among the 1855 classified growths, GPL's plots still match the land register of that era. This is classic, serious Pauillac without the trophy-label pretension, and a back-vintage bottle worth seeking out.

"The 2001 Grand Puy-Lacoste is a vintage that I have not tasted for a decade. It’s showing some signs of bricking on the rim. The bouquet does not quite have the intensity of the previous vintage, but it unfolds nicely to reveal a mélange of red and black fruit, tertiary aromas, gravel and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, grippy and much more youthful than the 2000, though it does not quite have the same complexity and terroir expression on the elegant finish." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by this property’s tell-tale cassis characteristics. Medium-bodied and monolithic, with fine ripeness as well as depth along with light to moderate tannin in the finish, the 2001 Grand-Puy-Lacoste should be at its peak between 2006-2014." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

"Good deep black crimson. Very nicely balanced and evolved. Very complete. Lifted and beautifully balanced. Very fresh and precise. Not as concentrated as some vintages of this wine (almost light!) but lovely now."
