If you want to understand why people fall for Pauillac, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the wine to pour, and the 2014 is pure GPL: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot from a single block of vines on very deep, coarse gravel. The estate says this high Cabernet share shows, once again, how well the vineyard expresses the grape. That vineyard is also something of a time capsule. Unusually among the 1855 classified growths, its plots still match the land register of that era. The Borie family (of Ducru-Beaucaillou) bought the estate in 1978, and François-Xavier Borie set out to revive a "sleeping beauty." He replanted where needed, improved the drainage, and moved into the run-down château with his wife Marie-Hélène to restore it. The winemaking stays traditional: grapes are picked by hand and sorted twice, macerated for about three weeks, then aged 16 to 18 months in French oak, 75% of it new. This is classic, serious Pauillac without the trophy-label pretension.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2014 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is one of my favorite wines from the Left Bank in this vintage. Bright and vivacious blackberry, cedar and graphite scents soar from the glass with real purpose. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite tensile with ample depth. It has matured since I last tasted it four years ago. It is very fresh and has a saline finish. Recommended. Tasted at the Bordeaux Index 10-Year-On tasting. N.B. Two bottles tasted blind at Southwold showed oxidation on the first." —Neal Martin

Jancis Robinson

"Rather elegant. Not flashy and not that concentrated but beautifully balanced. Already showing its charms even though the medium body and medium charge of tannins should preserve it for a good long life."

Decanter

94 points

"Nice aromatic intensity on the nose, full and forward. High toned, bright and lively but balanced giving quite a fun, energetic expression. It's lean and streamlined, not layered, doesn't venture too far from the centre with an element of tension about it keeping it straight and serious but this has charm and appeal too. A solid effort that's juicy and likeable and not trying too hard. Mineral grip on the finish bringing you back to the terroir. Salty with graphite. Something quite nice about this, still with strength."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"A sleek, graphite-fueled version, with ample cassis and black cherry fruit racing along, picking up light tobacco, anise and bramble notes along the way. The fruit is vivid, presenting pleasant coiled-up energy. Should age nicely."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"Firm with dark tannins, this is a structured wine. It is still reticent, likely to take several more years to show its fruit. It is dense with the black-plum fruit behind the firm tannins." —Roger Voss
