This is a mature Pomerol from the years when Jean-Michel Arcaute, working with Michel Rolland, built La Croix du Casse an excellent reputation, and it's a chance to taste that era more than 25 years on. The estate is at Catusseau in the south of Pomerol, a few kilometres from Figeac and Cheval Blanc. Its single vineyard sits on a terrace of ancient gravel and sand over crasse de fer, the iron-rich subsoil Pomerol is known for. Arcaute was the son-in-law of Georges Audy, a Pomerol wine merchant (and owner of Château Clinet) who bought the estate in 1956 and replanted much of it after frost damage. Arcaute died in 2001, and the Castéja family bought and restructured the property in 2005, so this 1998 comes from a chapter that has now closed. Pomerol has no official classification, but unofficial rankings sometimes put La Croix du Casse in the second tier. That's exactly where experienced Bordeaux drinkers look for mature Right Bank Merlot and Cabernet Franc without paying top-tier prices. And a bit of trivia: the property appears on 18th-century maps drawn for Louis XV, which show vines planted there in 1775.

Robert Parker

90 points

"La Croix du Casse remains an unheralded, but high-class source of rich, concentrated Pomerols. An outstanding effort, as well as one of the sleepers of the vintage, this dense ruby/purple-colored 1998 exhibits ripe, jammy notes of blackberries and cherries intermixed with licorice, smoke, and new wood. Full-bodied, with terrific fruit extraction, considerable muscle, and moderate tannin levels, it is not a wine to gulp down over the near-term." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary; duck breast with a cep or porcini sauce; beef tenderloin with morels; mushroom risotto finished with aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of a mature Pomerol: plum and dark cherry fruit softening into dried fruit, leather, earth, tobacco and truffle, with Cabernet Franc adding a fresher, slightly herbal lift. It's full-bodied but elegant, and age usually smooths the tannins into a supple, velvety texture. The finish should be dry, savoury and gently persistent.
