Few Bordeaux 2005s have aged as gracefully as Lagrange. This Third Growth Saint-Julien has been Japanese-owned since 1983, when Suntory acquired it from the Cendoya family and began a long, patient restoration under technical director Marcel Ducasse, whose legacy still defines the estate today. Ducasse handed over in 2007 to Bruno Eynard, with Matthieu Bordes succeeding as technical director in 2013, but 2005 falls squarely in the Ducasse era, and it sits at the top of his run here. The vintage itself is one of the great modern Bordeaux harvests, a perfect growing season that produced wines of structure, depth, and remarkable longevity. Twenty years on, the 2005 is fully mature and drinking at peak, with the cedar-and-tobacco classicism that Saint-Julien does as well as anywhere on the Left Bank.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2005 Lagrange was picked from 21 September until 10 October. It has a harmonious and vigorous bouquet with blackberry, cedar, tobacco aromas and just a light estuarine scent that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins and much more mid-palate presence than prior vintages. There is more body and grip, a sense of boldness towards the finish that should stand it in good stead for long-term ageing. Superb. Tasted at the Lagrange vertical at the estate." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

87 points

"The 2005 Lagrange comes across as somewhat masculine, tannic and austere. The oak is under control, which is always good to see, but the wine lacks charm and sweetness, although there is some nice concentration and body. Give it another 4-5 years and drink it over the next two decades." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

16 points

"Tasted blind. Light nose. Lots of tannin and acidity. Far from charming. Pretty stodgy." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Currant, mineral, plum and light toasty oak follow through to a full body, with ultrasilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is thoroughly beautiful. Superbalanced and very pretty."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"The tannins dominate this dark, brooding wine. At this stage, it seems to have closed up, leaving the fruit and acidity buried. But with this concentration, the future looks promising. There is a long aging potential here." —Roger Voss

More about Chateau Lagrange

It sounds like a corporate takeover, but when the Japanese arrived in Saint-Julien in 1983, they were serious. Lagrange is now one of the most consistent Third Growths on the Left Bank—reliably elegant, age-worthy, and honest. No shortcuts, just good Bordeaux.
