Bordeaux, but not the Bordeaux you're bracing for. The Amoreau family has farmed Le Puy on the limestone plateau east of Saint-Emilion since 1610, fourteen generations deep, and they went organic and then biodynamic decades before anyone was handing out credit for it. Duc des Nauves comes from a neighboring vineyard the Amoreau family owns, on the same limestone but slightly lower down, farmed and made by the Le Puy team; it's their most immediate cuvee: spontaneous fermentation, famously little added sulfur, and aging in neutral vessels that leave the fruit alone. The result is light on its feet and savory rather than plush, with red berries, crushed stone and herbs over fine tannins and real energy. This is Bordeaux you can open on a Tuesday without ceremony, and it's better with a slight chill.

More about Chateau Le Puy

This is Bordeaux as counterculture. For over 400 years, the Amoreau family has farmed organically and biodynamically in the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, using only indigenous yeasts and no SO2 during fermentation. Neal Rosenthal brought their wildly idiosyncratic wines to America, and they've built a devoted cult following.
