Here's a Bordeaux made like a Burgundy: instead of the usual grand vin and second wine, Château Le Rey bottles two cuvées side by side, each from its own parcels, and Les Rocheuses is the limestone one. It comes from parcels 5 and 6 on the Sainte-Colombe plateau, a village just east of Saint-Émilion, where the soil is thin and the rock sits close to the surface. The estate credits that limestone with the minerality and finesse in its wines, and opening this next to its clay-grown sibling, Les Argileuses, is about as clear a terroir lesson as Bordeaux offers. The 2022 is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It was fermented parcel by parcel in small conical steel tanks, then aged 12 months in barrel with just 20% new oak, which is less than the estate usually uses. Only 8,000 bottles were made. Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux is still one of the Right Bank's better-kept secrets, and this is a great way to taste what Saint-Émilion-style limestone can do, without the famous-name markup.

More about Chateau Le Rey

Château Le Rey makes the case for Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, the quieter appellation just east of Saint-Émilion, and for a fresher, more transparent kind of Right Bank Merlot.

The estate covers about 12 hectares on a clay plateau near Sainte-Colombe. For generations it belonged to the Roque family; in 2016 Philippe le Roy, the last of that line, sold it to a trio of partners, Peter Kwok, Philippe Lambrecht and Jean-Christophe Meyrou, who have run it since.

Les Argileuses takes its name from that clay, argile in French. It is mostly Merlot with a little Cabernet Franc, made with a light hand so that fruit and place come before the barrel. Expect a fresh, mineral style of Bordeaux: dark berries, fine-grained tannins and a purity that sets it apart from heavier, riper Right Bank wines.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rosemary-and-garlic lamb chops, seared duck breast with cherry sauce, steak frites, wild mushroom risotto, or a hard aged cheese like Comté or Mimolette.

Tasting Profile

Expect a Right Bank Merlot in its fresher, limestone-grown style: ripe plum, black cherry and a touch of violet, with a savoury, stony edge. Typically medium-bodied, with lively acidity and fine, polished tannins; the modest new oak stays in the background, leaving a clean, mineral finish. Think a lighter-footed Saint-Émilion.
