A Pomerol so small it is vinified entirely in barrel, not in tank. Chateau Maillet is a couple of hectares on gravel, clay and sand farmed by Mickael Moze Berthon, the seventh generation of a family that has held vineyards here since 1820, and since 2014 they have worked with consultant Hubert de Bouard of Chateau Angelus following a full renovation of the cellar. The vineyard is 95% Merlot with 5% Cabernet Franc, and the barrel-only regime, including malolactic fermentation in wood, is what gives the wine its unusually round texture and silky finish. 2015 was one of the great modern Right Bank vintages, warm and even, and this bottle now has a decade of bottle age doing its work. Open it with an hour of air; it is generous now and has plenty of road left through the 2030s.

Robert Parker

91 points

"The 2015 Maillet is deep in color. The nose offers macerated dark cherries intermingling with vanilla and blueberries that is powerful, if missing the delineation of some of the top Pomerol crus. The palate is full-bodied with grainy tannin. There is a lot of extraction here, a little coarse in texture with dense black cherries and mulberry on the finish. Not a bad Pomerol by any means, although it does miss some sophistication and breeding." —Neal Martin

Jancis Robinson

"De Boüard consults. Silly heavy bottle. Sweet cocoa impression on the front palate. Very polished tannins until a rather drying end. Hard work for now! Bitter finish."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"A pure, unadorned style, with fresh raspberry and damson plum notes that stretch out, underscored by singed apple wood. Remains fruit-driven overall."

More about Chateau Maillet

Pomerol might be small, but there are still hidden corners where serious producers do quiet work. Maillet sits among them, making wines from old vines on exceptional terroir. Rich, sappy, and built for a long life—exactly what you want from the right bank.
