A Calistoga Cabernet from one of Napa's most celebrated names. Château Montelena needs little introduction — the estate's 1973 Chardonnay placed first in the white flight at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, putting Napa on the international map overnight. Today Bo Barrett, son of the late James Barrett who bought the estate in 1972, leads the operation alongside winemaker Matt Crafton. The Cabernet program has long been the estate's other quiet anchor — built for the cellar, sourced from cool-climate Calistoga sites, and made in a structured, classically proportioned style. 2006 in Napa was a hot summer rescued by a cool September, pushing harvest into October and producing wines of bright acidity, firm structure, and patience. Nineteen years on, this one is finally rounding into its window.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, a re-release from the winery, is just starting to enter an early plateau of maturity where the aromas show some signs of opening up. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, game and licorice give the 2006 a decidedly wild, almost feral feel, in both its flavors and structural profile." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

91 points

"The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate appears to have completely shut down, not surprising as Montelena’s Cabernet Sauvignons typically need plenty of time. The 2006 reveals medium to full body, austere tannins and lots of red and black fruits, dusty, loamy soil undertones and a hint of herbs/tobacco leaf. Give it another 4-5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 20+." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

"Supple, silky, perfumed wine. Fully evolved and fresher than most. Dry finish and very different from the Napa mainstream. Verging on wimpy! Lots of acidity."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Carafe an hour ahead. Pour with a slow-roasted lamb shoulder, dry-aged ribeye with peppercorn crust, braised oxtail, or roast duck with blackberry. Cheese-wise, an aged Manchego or Cabot Clothbound Cheddar plays beautifully.

Tasting Profile

Structured, austere, classical. Black currant, dried red cherry, cedar, dusty earth, tobacco leaf, and a savory herbal lift. Tannins firm but increasingly fine; finish long, dry, and dignified. Cellar Cabernet just hitting form.
