A Second Growth Pauillac from a cool, wet year, made to be aromatic and silky rather than to bulk up. That makes the 2007 Pichon Lalande one of the easier ways to get to know this estate without paying for a blockbuster vintage. Spring 2007 was wet with only occasional sun, and temperatures stayed low enough that the malolactic fermentation was minimal. So the team kept fermentation and maceration temperatures under tight control and ended up with excellent balance between alcohol, tannin and acidity. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and a generous 36% Merlot for Pauillac, with 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard sits in southern Pauillac, next to Château Latour and running toward Saint-Julien, on the Médoc's poor, well-drained gravel over clay. It's also a milestone year for the house: 2007 is when the Louis Roederer family bought the estate. They are only the third family to run it in more than three centuries.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic; entrecôte à la bordelaise; duck breast with a cherry reduction; wild mushroom and thyme tart; aged Comté or Mimolette.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Pauillac profile in the more perfumed, silky style this estate is known for: blackcurrant and dark cherry with cedar, graphite and a hint of tobacco. It's typically medium- to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity that keep it balanced rather than heavy, and it finishes long and savoury.
