One of the most singular wines in all of France, from the cult Reynaud family estate. Chateau Rayas makes its Chateauneuf-du-Pape from 100% Grenache (where most neighbors blend many grapes) grown on cool, sandy soils in a wooded northern pocket of the appellation. The result defies every cliche about big, jammy southern Rhone reds: it's pale, perfumed and astonishingly elegant, more Burgundian than Provencal. The 2005 vintage was structured and ageworthy, and this remains a benchmark for what Grenache can achieve. Production is tiny and bottles are rare; decant gently and savor.
