The smallest classified estate in Saint-Julien, hiding in plain sight among far more famous neighbors and quietly out-performing its station. Chateau Saint-Pierre traces its origins to 1693, and when Henri Martin bought it in 1982 he painstakingly reassembled a property that had been split between two daughters in the nineteenth century, restoring its original footprint; the Martin family still runs it, now under Jean-Louis Triaud. The seventeen hectares of gravel, sand and clay are densely planted at 10,000 vines per hectare, with many vines close to fifty years old, and the blend leans hard on Cabernet Sauvignon at around 75% with Merlot and Cabernet Franc filling out the rest before sixteen months in French oak. The 2019 season was hot and dry but never lost its acidity, giving Saint-Julien wines that combine ripe, deep fruit with silky, well-coated tannins and real lift. This is built for the long haul: broach a bottle now with a long decant, or leave it alone for five to ten years and be glad you did.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Saint-Pierre has a quintessential Saint-Julien nose, very well defined with blackberry, brown spices and cedar unfurling with each swirl. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh and full of tension. Good mid-weight depth, grippy yet fresh, with an appealing corpulence on the finish. Yummy! Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

93 points

"A fleshy, sensual wine, the 2019 Saint-Pierre bursts from the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries, burning embers and subtle spices. Full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, it's seamless and polished, with a sweet core of fruit, melting tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a nicely defined finish. More overtly ripe than its stablemate Gloria, Saint-Pierre must be the most gourmand, immediate wine of Saint-Julien this year, and it's already drinking well on release." —William Kelley

Decanter

"Such an expressive nose, high toned, floral, a bit wild with some medicinal aspects, coffee, leather and cola notes. The texture is just gorgeous, there's a chewiness that you find in a lot of the St-Julien's but it's soft, generous, round and mouth filling in a great way. Then a deep core of fruits come in with black liquorice, underpinned by excellent cooling acidity and menthol freshness. I like this a lot. Great florality and perfume surrounding the fruit on the palate too. This has a seductive appeal with rich fruit and rich spicing." —Georgie Hindle

Wine Spectator

"Ripe and well-built, with a gentle, understated approach stylistically and a rounded feel, as warm earth, sweet tobacco and savory details permeate a core of friendly plum, black cherry and cassis flavors. Features a long iron note, which adds subtle tension through the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot."
