Clemens Busch, Riesling GG Marienburg Fahrlay, 2024

This is the blue-slate cru of Clemens Busch's Marienburg, and the whole point of it is tension. Fahrlay is the only parcel of blue slate the Busches farm on this steep Pundericher hillside, and it gives a Riesling that hums with sizzling acidity, salinity, and a floral lift you don't get from the red or gray soils next door. Busch has farmed here organically since 1984 and biodynamically since 2005, one of the Mosel's true pioneers; this is a bone-dry Grosses Gewachs (grand cru) from vines up to 80 years old, spontaneously fermented and raised in the estate's ancient 1,000-liter Fuder casks. It's charming even young but built to age for a decade-plus. Marked [Pre-Arrival ETA 7/15].

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Riesling Pündericher Marienburg Grosses Gewächs is from the gray slate of a parcel below the castle. Stone and a touch of reduction make for an alluring nose. The palate already is a wonderful unity of stoniness, slate and ripe, taut, juicy lemon. It has a beautifully bright linearity, moving forward with lovely balance and drive on the svelte body." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2024 Fahrlay GG Pündericher Marienburg offers clear, elegant and aromatic pineapple, stone fruit and ripe peach aromas intertwined with saline notes, flinty slate and even some floral nuances. Elegant and refined on the palate, this is a dense, crystalline and dry but irresistibly aromatic and stimulatingly saline Fahrlay with a lemon-bitter finish. It comes from up to 80-year-old vines on blue slate. This is spectacularly charming for its young age but indicates excellent potential as well. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in March 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Clemens Busch

Clemens, the 5th of his name, along with wife Rita, are stalwarts of biodynamics and natural wine making, a rarity in the Mosel. Situated on the diving line between the middle and lower Mosel, they've single handedly regained recognition for their home vineyard, Marienberg.

The Marienberg was collateral damage of German bureaucracy in 1971. It's 23 hectares were expanded to include 91 hectares and its reputation quickly faded. Clemens and Rita have spent a lifetime teasing out the once recognized parcels and applying their lost names. Red, grey and blue slate snake through the vineyard. Each bottle, besides being a single vineyard, is further divided by slate type with a corresponding capsule to indicate which color it was grown on.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
