A back-vintage bottle from one of the Loire's most revered estates. Clos Rougeard, near Chace in Saumur-Champigny, built its name on Cabernet Franc that ages gracefully for decades, fermented in old cement vats and raised in barrel. Le Clos is the estate's blended Cabernet Franc cuvée, drawn from clay-limestone plots in Saumur-Champigny. The 2013 was a cooler, more challenging vintage, giving a lighter, fresher style that is fully ready now. A rare opportunity to drink Loire history without waiting.

Robert Parker

"The 2013 Saumur Champigny Le Clos includes the barrels from Les Poyeux, which wasn't produced due to hail damage. The wine shows a beautiful cherry color followed by a deep and concentrated yet also fresh and floral bouquet of red berries and cherries. Silky and elegant on the palate, with fine tannins and lots of energy and finesse as well as a brilliant fruit, this is a wonderfully pure and tensioned Le Clos with very good length." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Clos Rougeard

here are some very famous wines that are extremely limited and inspire a cult like following; and then there is Clos Rougeard. The tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and even tinier amounts of Chenin Blanc that the Foucault brothers make in Saumur-Champigny are among the most rare and sought after bottles in France and now the U.S.

What's the trick? Well it's a bit mysterious but basically they possess very old vines on special terroir. Their yields are tiny, farming is meticulous and the cellar is deep, dank and cold. Those few of us luck enough to visit can attest to layers of mold and caverns of oak barrels with various vintages slowly fermenting or resting for years before bottling.

The wines are stunning. They can age probably forever. And they are extremely limited.

Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
