Champon is one of Clusel-Roch’s most elegant parcels—north-facing, high on the slope, and planted to old massale-selection serine clones that bring extra aromatic lift and finesse. The domaine’s style is resolutely traditional: organic farming, whole-cluster fermentation, minimal new oak. Everything here is about preserving the nuance of site and grape.

In 2022, a warm and generous vintage, Champon remains composed. The wine opens with violet, black pepper, and red berry notes—light on its feet but with plenty of tension underneath. There’s texture and depth, but the fruit stays fresh, and the structure is built more on acidity and finely woven tannins than overt extraction.

Drink it young with a decant to catch its floral energy, or cellar it for a decade as it unfurls. For lovers of Syrah that whispers rather than shouts, Clusel-Roch’s Champon is a quietly compelling expression of Côte-Rôtie.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2022 Côte-Rôtie Le Champon offers notes of black cherry, black plum, dried meat and pencil shavings. Stemmy undertones add more complexity. Full-bodied and concentrated, the 2022 is framed by ripe tannins, though marked wood tannins slightly detract from its elegance. Packed with sufficient energy, it concludes with a persistent, nuanced finish." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

93 points

"Seamless and chiseled, the 2022 Champon, crafted from 45- to 65-year-old vines planted in the upper northern part of the appellation, is also slightly reduced. After aeration, it bursts from the glass with aromas of violets and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, dense and tense, it's linear and well structured with dense, velvety tannins and a telluric strength, culminating in a long, ethereal finish accented with lead pencil notes. This racy Côte-Rôtie promises to age gracefully over the next two decades." —Yohan Castaing

More about Clusel-Roch

Guillaume Clusel continues a family legacy that began in 1969 on the steep granite slopes of Ampuis. His six hectares of Syrah in Côte-Rôtie are farmed organically; his half-hectare of Viognier in Condrieu sits on biotite granite and yields wines of mineral precision. Whole-bunch fermentation and natural practices preserve the fragrance. This is Northern Rhône doing what it does best.
