Perched on schist-rich slopes just above Ampuis, Viallière is one of Côte-Rôtie’s top lieux-dits, known for producing Syrah with fine tannins, red fruit lift, and floral perfume. Clusel-Roch, a family-run estate farming organically since the early ‘90s, takes a gentle, hands-off approach: whole-cluster fermentation, native yeasts, and aging in mostly used oak barrels.

The 2022 vintage brings purity and poise—notes of violet, black cherry, olive, and crushed rock, framed by a fresh, linear structure. There’s depth here, but it’s coiled rather than explosive. The whole-cluster fermentation adds aromatic lift and savory complexity without overwhelming the wine’s detail.

Drink with a decant now, or cellar for 10–15 years. For lovers of Syrah that whispers rather than roars—think Jamet, Levet (on a calmer day), or Northern Rhône with a Pinot-like soul—Clusel-Roch’s Viallière 2022 is a beautifully refined, terroir-driven gem.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Viallière uses grapes from the lieu-dit of the same name, with vines planted back in 1984. Vinified with 40% whole clusters and matured for 20 months in French oak barriques (roughly 20% new), the 2022 reveals itself with evocative graphite, black plum, crushed violets and black cherry notes. Round and refreshing, the 2022 signs off with tenacity on the spiced finish." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

93 points

"Crafted from vines planted in the heart of the coteau, the 2022 Cote Rotie La Vialliere, fermented with 30% whole bunches, offers up aromas of violets, dark berries, cassis, spices and earth. Medium to full-bodied, dense and tense, it's linear, with a fresh mid-palate, a juicy core of fruit and nicely framed tannins and has an ethereal, elegant finish. Matured for two years in barrels, it displays greater depth and a racier mineral profile than Les Schistes." —Yohan Castaing

More about Clusel-Roch

Guillaume Clusel continues a family legacy that began in 1969 on the steep granite slopes of Ampuis. His six hectares of Syrah in Côte-Rôtie are farmed organically; his half-hectare of Viognier in Condrieu sits on biotite granite and yields wines of mineral precision. Whole-bunch fermentation and natural practices preserve the fragrance. This is Northern Rhône doing what it does best.
