This is Chassagne-Montrachet from a parcel right next to Grand Cru Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, the kind of address that usually comes with a much grander label and a much bigger bill. Les Blanchots Dessous lies just south of that Grand Cru and shares many of its qualities. The soil is limestone rocks over clay on limestone bedrock, so it drains very well but still gives the vines a rich mix of nutrients. Laura Coffinet and Philippe Duvernay founded the domaine in 1989, and all of their vines are in the village of Chassagne. Philippe's approach is classic and restrained. The grapes are picked by hand and pressed gently, and he rarely stirs the lees because he wants the wine to develop without oxidative notes. That kind of care pays off in a 2014 with real bottle age behind it: sustainably farmed Chassagne in a medium-bodied, elegant style that's worth opening now.
