From one of Brunello's southernmost estates, this reserve honors its vineyard's name—Poggio al Vento means "hill exposed to the wind"—where south-southwest-facing slopes and acidic volcanic soils produce Sangiovese of uncommon finesse. The 2006 combines power and elegance: dark cherry, mint, and licorice emerge from the glass, developing into layers of dried thyme, oregano, baking spices, and porcini with aeration. Four years in large Slavonian and French oak casks, then two years in bottle, have created a textured wine with lifted black cherry flavors and fine mineral tannins. The anticipated drinking window extends through 2046, rewarding both current enjoyment and cellaring.

"The same can be said about Col d’Orcia’s 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento. Col d’Orcia places a little more emphasis on structure than Valdicava, so I was surprised by how well the 2006 showed, considering it hasn’t even been released yet." —Antonio Galloni

"The Col d'Orcia 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento opens to pretty intensity and richness. This is a thickly layered wine that leans robustly on the senses. It shows sweet tannins and a voluptuous texture with a free-flowing bouquet that carries dark fruit, tobacco and spice in a long continuum. There is a sweet note, a ripe fruit tone on the end, and the tannins are supple. This wine feels riper and sweeter compared to the village bottling from 2006." —Monica Larner

"This is one of the greatest Poggio al Vento wines ever made in my opinion. A late bud burst and rainy spring prepared a long growing season that, matched with mild and dry summer conditions, produced great grapes come harvest. With 31.5g/l of dry extract this Brunello is well representative of the vintage and the style of the 2000s, without losing any grace. Restrained cherry and raspberry are enhanced by clay minerality, fresh leather and tar. Black cherry and prune flavours are finely tuned with velvety, young tannins alongside almost zesty acidity and full body. A very classic Montalcino which packs a punch. One to hold on to in the cellar for a few years."

"This iconic Brunello seamlessly combines power and finesse. It opens with earthy aromas of underbrush, tobacco, tilled soil and blackberries. The dense palate delivers juicy black cherry and raspberry alongside black pepper, licorice and a balsam note. It's impeccably balanced but still very young, and still showing racy acidity and assertive tannins. Give it time to soften and develop more complexity."

More about Col d'Orcia

Col d'Orcia's Brunello is the wine you pull out when you want to prove that Montalcino makes wines of real power and grace. Situated on the southern slopes around the Val d'Orcia, they've been at this since the 1970s—consistent, slightly more modern than some traditionalist neighbors, never oversold. The wines have structure but they're not aggressive. They reward time in the cellar but they're not austere. This is the middle path done exceptionally well.
