Old-school, whole-cluster red Burgundy from a serious Vosne-Romanee address. Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot was founded by Jack Confuron in 1964 and is run by his sons Jean-Pierre and Yves, who farm across the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Les Suchots is a Premier Cru sitting just below Richebourg and Romanee-Saint-Vivant, and the domaine's traditional approach, very ripe whole-bunch fruit, native fermentation, patient aging, produces a structured, savory style built for the long haul. The 2015 vintage was a warm, concentrated year that gave generous, ageworthy wines. Decant if drinking now, or cellar a decade or two.

"This is almost always the domaine's best 1er and so it appears to be again in 2015 with its ultra-floral and spicy nose of red currant and softly exotic Asian-style tea aromas. There is a wonderfully refined and seductive mouth feel to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with abundant dry extract, all wrapped in a hugely long finish that is shaped by dense by fine tannins. This is a first-rate Suchots though one that is expressly built-to-age."

"The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is a little overdone on the nose, one of the few 2015 Premier Crus to come across as jammy and lacking delineation. The palate is sweet, chewy and very oaky and the wood tannins dominate the unappealing finish. I understand that this is praised elsewhere, but I have never warmed to the style of the domaine and my skepticism is borne out by this blind appraisal. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." —Neal Martin

"Cask sample. Dense and tightly woven. Bitter chocolate character, dark black fruit with a charred note on the finish. Finely grained but requires many years of maturation."
