Corison’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from old-vine, dry-farmed vineyards on the western Rutherford bench—sites that offer excellent drainage, cooling breezes, and deep, gravelly soils. Cathy Corison’s approach has always favored moderate alcohol, low extraction, and restrained oak, resulting in wines that age gracefully and speak clearly of site and season.

The 2021 vintage was ideal: dry but not drought-stressed, with long hang times and beautifully preserved acidity. The wine opens with aromas of black cherry, cassis, violet, graphite, and cigar box, with a palate that’s textured but linear, showing firm but fine tannins and a long, mineral finish. There’s purity of fruit, but also savory complexity—more Left Bank than valley floor plush.

Drink it now with a decant, or cellar confidently for 15–20+ years. Perfect with lamb, roasted mushrooms, or aged cheddar.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is gorgeous. Medium in body and super-expressive, the 2021 is a classic Cathy Corison wine. Pipe tobacco, cedar, crushed, leaves and earthy tones all run through this wonderfully nuanced Cabernet Sauvignon. Readers will find an exquisite, alluring old-school Napa Cabernet that delivers the goods, big time. All the elements are so well balanced. As always, the Napa Cabernet is a blend of three sites in St. Helena" —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"Made in her signature classic, restrained style, Cathy Corison's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts vibrant scents of cassis and black cherries while remaining medium-bodied, streamlined and silky on the palate. It's reasonably tannic, with fine-grained, gently dusty tannins on the finish, but also long and mouthwatering." —Joe Czerwinski

Decanter

97 points

"A totally seductive, fresh, and vibrant 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Cathy Corison, showcasing fragrant black cherry and blue fruit aromatics, a hint of liquorice and incense, and toasty cedarwood. Medium to full-bodied, with silky boysenberry fruit, satiny tannins, and a spine of tantalising acidity, and a long mineral-rich finish lifted by tangerine peel and grapefruit zest. Aged 20 months in French oak barrels, of which 50% were new. The winery has been a Napa staple almost since opening its doors in 1987." —Jonathan Cristaldi

Wine Spectator

95 points

"This takes an elegant approach, offering racy, refined notes of iris, violet, hibiscus and mulberry that stay focused and fresh from start to finish, flashing light mineral and anise accents along the way. The finish glistens with purity, and the precision should allow this to evolve nicely in the cellar." —James Molesworth

Wine Enthusiast

96 points

"A demonstration of restraint with depth focused on complexity, length, and poise. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon delivers flavors of cedar, firm black plum, and the lightest touch of coffee, lifted by aromatics of crushed fennel seed and hints of pink grapefruit. Tannins are powdery fine while persistent, carried into a long finish by mouthwatering acidity." —Elaine Chukan Brown

More about Corison

Cathy Corison has been making elegant, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon in St. Helena since 1987—long before anyone was paying serious attention to nuance in Napa. She sources from great benchland vineyards between Rutherford and St. Helena (Corison Vineyard itself, plus top sites like Castleview) and treats them like they deserve respect. That's the whole philosophy, and it works. These wines prove restraint is a luxury.

Tasting Profile

Aromas of dark cherry, plum, and black currant with herbaceous notes. Full-bodied with supple tannins, bright acidity, and a finish showing cherry and mineral complexity.

Cathy Corison discovered her passion for wine while studying biology in Claremont, CA. She went on to get a masters in enology at UC Davis in the mid-1970s then, after stints at leading estates (like Chappellet), founded her eponymous estate. She produced her first vintage in 1987 and has been making her Cabernet the same way ever since, walking the fine line between elegance and power.

The vineyards are some of Napa's best Cabernet sites, located between Rutherford and St. Helena, with deep stony and alluvial soils that produce a sublimely concentrated and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon. Exercising minimal intervention in the cellar, Cathy explains her winemaking technique as: “a hands-off approach to winemaking; it is my job to let the vineyards speak.”
