Mountain Cabernet from a remote slope of the Mayacamas range, where the vineyard is surrounded by wilderness. The 2018 vintage was generous and unhurried there. Plentiful spring rain gave a strong, healthy fruit set, a mild summer let flavors build steadily, and harvest stretched over three weeks so each block could be picked when it was ready. This is the estate's flagship wine, almost pure Cabernet (98%, with 1% each of Petit Verdot and Malbec), aged 20 months in French oak barrels, 62% of them new. At 14.8% alcohol it's a big wine, but the producer describes it as "sleek" and mineral rather than plush, and built it for decades of aging. The estate is a young project, established in 2001, with select blocks redeveloped eleven years later, so this is a good chance to get to know a serious mountain Cabernet early on. Decant it for a steak tonight, or put it away and see where it goes.

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is elegant and nuanced from the very first taste. Over the last year, the 2018 has developed from a powerhouse into a much more refined wine. There is plenty of mountain tannin and structure, but those elements are completely enrobed by the fruit. Hints of iron, cedar, dried herbs, mint and sweet red cherry fruit emerge with a bit of time in the glass. The 2018 is a very rare, quintessentially elegant mountain Cabernet. Best of all, the 2018 won't take years to come together. I would drink it ahead of the 2016 or 2017, but if opened young it needs several hours of aeration." —Antonio Galloni

"With this vintage, the sixth release, Françoise Peschon is now consultant winemaker. She first met Henry and Vanessa Cornell in 2011 and officially joined them as winemaker in 2013, bringing on board Elizabeth Tangney in 2018 as the director of viticulture and winemaking. The abundant growing season in this western-facing pocket of the Mayacamas range atop Spring Mountain, delivered a deeply concentrated and structured 2018. Voluptuous blackberry fruit is layered with cassis, dark plum and cocoa, along with dried wild fennel and thyme. Firm, fine-grained tannins provide support through the long crushed-stone finish."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dry-aged ribeye or porterhouse; rosemary-and-garlic leg of lamb; braised short ribs over polenta; lamb chops with a cardamom-and-cumin rub; wild mushroom and beef bourguignon.

Tasting Profile

Blackberry, black currant, violets and a hint of cardamom on the nose. The palate brings fresh cherry, dried mint, espresso and a stony, river-rock minerality. Full and powerful, with a sleek, cohesive structure built for long aging.
