La Dame de Montrose is the second wine of Chateau Montrose, one of Saint-Estephe's great estates, and it's made from the same vineyard and to the same exacting standards as the grand vin. Where the first wine leans Cabernet and built-to-last, the Dame tends to lead with Merlot, which gives it a suppler, more red-fruited charm you can enjoy sooner. The 2015 comes from a fine Bordeaux vintage and has had a decade to soften. In this half-bottle, it's a perfectly portioned pour of pedigreed Saint-Estephe, mature and ready for the table.

More about Dame de Montrose

Created in 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe (who ran Château Montrose solo from 1944 to 1960), La Dame de Montrose is the second wine of the estate—and it's not an afterthought. Supple, silky, built from the same vineyard with more restraint and accessibility. It accounts for 40-45% of the vineyard's production. Aged 12 months in 30% new oak. This is how a second label should work: as a genuine expression, not a leftover.
