Daniel Bouland makes some of the most serious Gamay in Beaujolais, mineral-driven Morgons that hold their own against the Pinot Noirs of the Cote de Nuits. Corcelette is a sandier, granite-influenced lieu-dit in Morgon, and the Vieilles Vignes bottling pulls from his oldest plantings for extra depth and concentration. This 2012 now has well over a decade of age, so expect a Gamay that has softened into something complex and savory rather than fruit-forward. A back-vintage cru Beaujolais for drinkers who want to see how far this grape can go. From a private collection.

Antonio Galloni

"Brilliant ruby. Mineral-tinged black raspberry and cherry pit aromas are complemented by suggestions of black cardamom and cracked pepper. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering intense red and dark berry flavors with a touch of bitter chocolate. Gripping tannins shape the finish, which leaves a sexy Indian spice note behind. I find this wine more closed than its 2013 sibling." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2012 Morgon Corcelette comes from 60-year-old vines and IS aged in foudres. It has a broodier nose than the Cote de Brouilly with dusky blackberry and briary scents, touches of wild hedgerow and woodland. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is very well-balanced, but there is something introspective toward the finish that is very engaging and urges you to take another sip. Drink now-2020." —Neal Martin

More about Daniel Bouland

Cru Beaujolais is no longer a secret among wine lovers. For about a decade now names like Lapierre, Foillard and Metras have been among the most sought after by collectors and everyday wine drinkers alike. We have long believed that the wines of Daniel Bouland were deserving of the same attention and devotion, and in the last couple of years that has become a reality.

Bouland's wines come from very old vines and seem to operate on three well-delineated layers: An airy top register of flowers and flint-smoke, the middle layer flush with refined (and sometimes powerful) red fruits, and precise, vividly mineral structures at the low register. It's this near- visualizable depth and detail that sets them apart. Bouland would probably make a great photographer.

The wines can age. Ten years is not asking too much. But most also drink wonderfully on release - especially the Chiroubles, Melanie, and Corcelette. They have brains and brawn. And, most importantly, beauty.
