Daniel Bouland makes Morgon for people who take Gamay seriously, mineral and structured enough to rival the Pinot Noirs of the Cote de Nuits. Delys is one of his single-site cuvees, and this 2014 has reached a mature, harmonious drinking window after a decade in bottle. The youthful fruit has softened into savory complexity without losing the wine's granite-edged backbone. A back-vintage cru Beaujolais drinking beautifully right now. From a private collection.

Antonio Galloni

"Vivid ruby. Powerful dark berry and floral pastille scents are energized by a spicy nuance and a suggestion of smoky minerals. Intense black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors show excellent clarity and become sweeter with air. Concentrated yet graceful in style, with no rough edges and a violet pastille note building slowly on the very long, focused finish." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2014 Morgon De Lys Vieilles Vignes has a slightly more floral bouquet compared to the 2014 Morgon Corcelette - wilted violet petals begin manifesting on the nose as it opens and showing more opulence, though nowhere near the level of its 2015 counterpart. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well judged acidity, quite saline in the mouth, finishing with a truffle-tinged, white pepper black fruit that lines the mouth. Nice grip here - this is a 2014 Morgon that has the potential to last a few years. Simply excellent." —Neal Martin

More about Daniel Bouland

Cru Beaujolais is no longer a secret among wine lovers. For about a decade now names like Lapierre, Foillard and Metras have been among the most sought after by collectors and everyday wine drinkers alike. We have long believed that the wines of Daniel Bouland were deserving of the same attention and devotion, and in the last couple of years that has become a reality.

Bouland's wines come from very old vines and seem to operate on three well-delineated layers: An airy top register of flowers and flint-smoke, the middle layer flush with refined (and sometimes powerful) red fruits, and precise, vividly mineral structures at the low register. It's this near- visualizable depth and detail that sets them apart. Bouland would probably make a great photographer.

The wines can age. Ten years is not asking too much. But most also drink wonderfully on release - especially the Chiroubles, Melanie, and Corcelette. They have brains and brawn. And, most importantly, beauty.
