Dard et Ribo are natural-wine pioneers of the Northern Rhone, and their whites are the quiet cult story. This Crozes-Hermitage Blanc is a blend of Roussanne and Marsanne (Roussanne-dominant, roughly 50-67% Roussanne) grown on red clay (kaolin) and stony granitic ground at Les Baties in Larnage, farmed organically and made with the domaine's signature light touch: minimal handling, little to no added sulfur, and no attempt to over-manicure it. That gives you a white with real texture and cut rather than the waxy heaviness the region can fall into. Serve it cool but not ice-cold, and give it a swirl to let the aromatics open. It drinks beautifully now and has the stuffing to hold a few years.

More about Dard et Ribo

René-Jean Dard and François Ribo met in Beaune wine school in their late teens and started their estate in 1984 in Tain-l'Hermitage. They were making natural wine in the Northern Rhône when everyone thought they were crazy. Seven and a half hectares scattered across seven villages, mostly Crozes-Hermitage, some St-Joseph, a slice of Hermitage. Today, their subtle, refined Syrah is exactly what cool-climate Rhône should be. Pioneering, not fashionable.
