What is this wine?
Domaine Bertin-Delatte’s Échalier 2022 is a distinctive, naturally made Chenin Blanc from Anjou, in France’s Loire Valley. The domaine, run by Emmanuel Delatte and Jérôme Bertin, farms biodynamically on schist-rich soils around Rablay-sur-Layon. Échalier is their top cuvée, crafted from older vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged in neutral oak without fining or filtration. The result is an expressive, textural Chenin that reflects both terroir and artisanal care.

Why get this wine?
Bertin-Delatte has become one of the Loire’s most exciting natural producers, known for pure, unadorned expressions of Chenin Blanc. Échalier stands out for its precision and depth—it’s rich in texture yet balanced by lively acidity and mineral drive. This is a soulful, serious wine for fans of producers like Richard Leroy or Domaine Huet, but with a freer, more natural edge.

What does this wine taste like?
Aromas of quince, pear, and baked apple mingle with honeycomb, chamomile, and wet stone. The palate is layered and saline, with subtle oxidative notes, vibrant acidity, and a long, savory finish. Textural, complex, and alive.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink now through 2030. Serve slightly cool (around 55°F) and give it time to breathe in the glass. Pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, aged goat cheese, or earthy vegetable dishes.

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
