Beaune 1er Crus do not always grab the spotlight in a list of red Burgundies, but in the hands of a serious grower they offer a level of finesse and value that the famous communes can struggle to match. Champs Pimont sits on the slope west of Beaune toward La Montagne, with iron-rich clay soils that tend toward perfumed, gently structured reds. Mark O'Connell's small, organically and biodynamically farmed Clos de la Chapelle, founded in 2011 in Volnay, makes this one with the same low-intervention approach as the rest of the lineup. The 2023 shows ripe red cherry and raspberry on the nose, with a lift of rose petal and a hint of earth; the palate is medium-bodied and silky, with fine tannins and the bright acidity that defines the cooler side of 2023. A graceful, drink-now-or-keep red Burgundy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck with cherries, mushroom tart, coq au vin, or hard cheeses with charcuterie. The lighter weight makes it a flexible weeknight red as well as a Sunday-roast partner.

Tasting Profile

Ripe red cherry and raspberry on the nose, lifted by rose petal and a touch of forest earth. The palate is medium-bodied and silky, with fine, well-knit tannins and the lively acidity that marks 2023. Perfumed, balanced, and graceful.
