Unlike any other Mâcon. Jean Thévenet built the modern reputation of Viré-Clessé essentially single-handed, harvesting Chardonnay later than anyone else in the Mâconnais and welcoming the touch of botrytis that arrives in his Quintaine vineyards. The result is a richly textured, naturally off-dry Chardonnay that retains some residual sugar — a style closer to a great Vouvray demi-sec than to white Burgundy as most know it. Son Gauthier now runs the estate; the E.J. Thévenet bottling honors Gauthier's grandfather Émile and his father Jean (the 'E' and 'J' stand for two separate people, not a compound name). 2011 was a generous Mâconnais vintage. Fourteen years on, this bottle is fully mature, with honey, beeswax, and dried-fruit aromatics that only patient bottle age can deliver.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"Light straw-gold. Wild, musky aromas of ripe nectarine, orange oil, honey and white truffle. Sweet on entry, then creamy and perfumed in the middle, with apricot, honey and baked bread flavors conveying an impression of sucrosité. As fat and lush as this is, there's a tangy quality to the fruit and firm acidity on the finish. Very complex and creamy for the year, showing some obvious noble rot influence. Gautier Thévenet was surprised at how open this bottle was, noting that it was tight before the summer." —Stephen Tanzer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras, roasted pork with stone-fruit chutney, blue cheeses such as Roquefort, Thai or moderately spicy Asian cuisine, apple tart, or a fruit-forward dessert course.

Tasting Profile

Honey, beeswax, candied citrus peel, and dried apricot lead, with a savory undertow of bread dough and chamomile. Rich and broad on the palate yet kept aloft by sharp acidity, finishing long with that signature touch of residual sweetness.
