This is the wine Domaine de la Pinte was built to make. When Roger Martin founded the estate in 1953, he planted 14 hectares of Savagnin on the blue Lias marls of the lieu-dit La Pinte à la Capitaine, intending to make nothing but Vin Jaune. At the time it was the largest estate planted to Savagnin. The family still calls Savagnin the grape its reputation rests on, and gives marl soils the credit for Vin Jaune's classic character. Pierre Martin carried on his father's work: the house has been organic since 1999 and biodynamic across all 34 hectares since 2009, with hand harvesting, native yeasts and a light hand on sulphur. Fair warning, though: this 2018 is a long-haul wine. The Martins say this wine can age for a century ("so they say," they add), and they describe this one as still young and exuberant, needing at least 15 years to fully open up. If you can't wait that long (we understand), take their advice: open it four hours ahead and serve it at 16°C, not fridge-cold.

"The 2018 Arbois Vin Jaune opens with pronounced acetaldehyde scents accentuated by delicate pastry and a touch of dried apple skin. Full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, the 2018 is a broader and more hedonistic rendition of its style, with persistence and a touch of heat on the savoury finish." —Nicolas Greinacher

More about Domaine de la Pinte

Jura's anchor estate, where Pierre Martin runs 34 hectares on two decades of organic farming and ten years of biodynamics. Minimal intervention philosophy means each vintage looks different—unpredictable, alive, authentic. These are wines for people who want to taste the vintage, not the producer's idea of consistency.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Aged Comté, Morbier or a warm baked Mont d'Or; coq au vin jaune with morels; chicken or veal in a mushroom cream sauce; a fragrant chicken curry.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Vin Jaune profile: walnut, curry spice, dried apricot and a savoury, salty tang from long ageing under a veil of yeast. Think fino Sherry, but unfortified and with sharper acidity. Typically dry, full-flavoured and taut, with a nutty, spicy finish that lasts a remarkably long time.
