A featherweight Arbois red, grown partly on the one vineyard the Morin family refused to sell. That vineyard is La Touraize. André-Jean Morin's grandfather Marius came back from the First World War scarred, quit winemaking in 1922 and sold every parcel but that one. His father Michel rebuilt the estate from it starting in the mid-1950s, against Marius's advice. André-Jean is the eighth generation of Morins growing vines in Arbois. In 2009 he left the local co-op and sold three of his 15 hectares to pay for his own winery, and today he and his wife Héléana bottle everything they make. La Cabane ("the shack") comes from 1.2 hectares of Ploussard on marl: early-1960s vines at La Touraize and early-1980s vines at Curoulet. The grapes are picked by hand and even destemmed by hand, and Morin never adds sugar. Even if you think red wine has to be big, this light Jura red is worth a try.

More about Domaine de la Touraize

A new addition to the Rosenthal Jura portfolio, this little domaine is the work of 8 generations of Morins. Over the years, these farmer-vignerons managed to hold onto their most prized vineyard, La Touraize. With old-fashioned tools and techniques, and an eye towards minimalism (no added yeasts, sugars, SO2 until malolactic fermentation finishes), the wines are purely delicious.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

“La Cabane” (“the shack”) comes from 1.2-ha. of Ploussard in two parcels: the blue marl of Curoulet planted in the early 1980s, and the grey marl of La Touraize planted in the early 1960s. The bunches are hand-harvested and also painstakingly de-stemmed by hand. The fruit is transferred by gravity to stainless steel, where it macerates semi-carbonically for two weeks before pressing, and the wine spends six months in large used barrels before being bottled without filtration, and with just 10-mg/L of added sulfur. Remarkably pure-fruited and ethereal, “La Cabane” clocks in under 12% alcohol (A-J never chaptalizes) yet expresses immense mineral depth. In its gorgeous translucent hue, its soaring aromas of citrus zest and red apples, and its light yet persistent palate, it embodies the uniqueness of this beloved indigenous variety.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels, jambon persillé, Morteau sausage with lentils, a wedge of young Comté, trout with brown butter, mushroom tart.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Arbois Ploussard profile: a pale, translucent red with wild strawberry, redcurrant and cranberry, plus a savoury, earthy edge and a hint of spice. Light-bodied, with whisper-fine tannins and bright, juicy acidity, it finishes fresh and dry. Think a lighter, more savoury Pinot Noir, and serve it slightly chilled.
