Ask about a classic Chateauneuf vintage and 2016 comes up fast. Domaine de Marcoux, run by the Armenier sisters, was an early adopter of biodynamic practices in the southern Rhone (certified organic since 1991; biodynamic in practice, not Demeter-certified) and remains one of the appellation's benchmark estates, farming organically since 1991. Their Vieilles Vignes is old-vine Grenache at its purest, and in this balanced, near-ideal vintage it leans into elegance: silk, delicacy, and perfectly ripe sweet-fresh fruit rather than sheer muscle. It's excellent now with a decant, and alongside the 2010 it's the release to lay down. This is the graceful face of a wine that can also flex.

Sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated but shockingly lithe raspberry, cherry liqueur, five-spice powder and lavender pastille flavors given lift and spine by a jolt of juicy acidity. Blends richness and delicacy with a deft hand and finishes wonderfully long and precise, with pliant tannins adding shape and gentle grip. Is this the wine of the vintage? It offers the essence of ripe Grenache in its notes of ripe plums, purple raspberries and stone fruit, then layers on savory-spicy-meaty complexity. "Fermented and aged in concrete for 18 months, this has lovely strawberry Grenache fruit on the nose, with a hint of cherry blossom. Sweet strawberry and raspberry on the palate teams up with bright acidity that helps to counter the sweet fruits. It's full but not heavy, with remarkable energy, and ample tannins which give texture, length and support to the ebullient fruits. A long finish. Certified organic."
