Grand Cru rosé Champagne with serious biodynamic credentials. Erick de Sousa farms 9.5 hectares of old vines in Avize on the Côte des Blancs and earned organic certification in 2010, biodynamic in 2013 — among the earliest in the region. His Brut Rosé is mostly Chardonnay from 60-plus-year-old Avize vines with a touch of red Pinot Noir from Aÿ for color, vinified largely in barrel and based on a single recent vintage. Daughter Charlotte handles vinification and sales as the next generation steps up. The result is a salmon-hued, savory rosé that drinks like a serious Blanc de Blancs with quiet red-fruit depth: toasted citrus peel, red currant, grapefruit pith, and a long chalky finish. Grower Champagne with real soul.

Antonio Galloni

"Dark pink, with a hint of onion skin; the color of a red wine from Arbois, even darker than some. Deep and smoky on the nose, with a spicy, vinous raspberry and cherry tone verging on Burgundian in character. Quite spicy, the cherry and wild berry flavors tinged by notes of clove, mace, cracked pepper and cayenne. A singular wine that would go perfectly with pungent cheeses or cured meats." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

"De Sousa's NV Brut Rosé is an assemblage of 92% Chardonnay fermented in stainless steel and 8% Pinot Noir fermented in small barrels. The wine has a beautiful onion color and opens with a delicate and vinous bouquet. On the palate, this is a round, charming, pretty smooth and fruity rosé with remarkable finesse and balance. Very seductive, with very nice creaminess and lingering brioche and red fruit flavors in the clear and fresh finish. The wine I tasted in April 2018 was based on the 2014 vintage that was bottled in April 2015 and disgorged in June 2016 with a charming dosage of seven grams per liter." —Stephan Reinhardt

"Wild strawberry flavors dominate this ultrafresh rosé. The wine, based onChardonnay and added Pinot Noir, is so fruity and ripe, while keeping a strict line in acidity."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for the table — lobster, seared tuna, duck breast, or a charcuterie spread. Also brilliant with miso-glazed salmon, sushi, mushroom tart, or aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Dry, salmon-hued, and savory rather than fruity — toasted orange peel, red currant, grapefruit pith, dried strawberry, and a chalky Côte des Blancs core. Barrel élevage gives weight; biodynamic old vines give length.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
