For years, this wine never left the domaine—it was poured at harvest meals and kept in the cellar, a family treasure. Only in 2012 did Lafon begin bottling Clos de la Baronne for public release, and now this 2.7-hectare monopole stands as one of Burgundy's great undiscovered crus. Vines averaging 40 years old grow in shallow clay over hard limestone, a combination that produces a fleshier, rounder Meursault than the austere Clos de la Barre across the way. This is the wine for those who want Meursault's complexity without the mineral austerity.
