If you want to understand why people who love Burgundy quietly obsess over Beaune, start here. David Croix — who cut his teeth running the cellars at Camille Giroud before launching his own domaine in 2005 — is one of the most thoughtful young growers in the Côte de Beaune, farming organically since 2008 with low yields and a hands-off cellar (ambient yeasts, used barrels, no fining or filtration). Les Bressandes sits on brown clay and gravel (grèze litée) on vines planted in the 1980s, fully destemmed here for a pure, fruit-forward expression. 2023 was a generous, ripe vintage in Beaune, and this premier cru shows the appellation's friendly, open-knit charm. Drinkable young but built to gain over the next decade — a little air now goes a long way.

"Sweet spot Outstanding. Elegant, cool and restrained aromas of layered red cherry, anise, floral and a whiff of exotic tea give way to super-sleek and strikingly textured flavors that contrast noticeably with the compact, youthfully austere and beautifully long finale. This isn't exactly old school in style but it's unabashedly built-to-age and a wine that is absolutely going to need it. Excellent it is but it's also a wine for the patient. " —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Beaune Les Bressandes 1er Cru has more fruit concentration than the Tuvilains, displaying lovely red cherry and crushed strawberry scents with darker fruit emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, lightly spiced with a touch of graphite toward the finish. Promising." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2023 Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes wafts from the glass with notes of sweet wild berries, orange zest and peonies, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and mineral palate with a textural core of fruit framed by fine, powdery tannins." —William Kelley

More about Domaine des Croix

If you aren't with familiar with Domaine des Croix, there is one thing you should know: we love David Croix! He begin his winemaking career straight out of viticulture school when he took over the reigns at Camille Giroud (as well as working with Guy Roulot), when he was just 24 years old. In 2016 he quit his day job to focus entirely on his own small domaine, which he purchased back in 2005.
