If Clos de la Roche is Morey's rock and muscle, Clos Saint-Denis is its perfume. The two Grand Crus adjoin, but Saint-Denis sits slightly lower on the slope on finer red-brown clay flecked with limestone, trading power for silk, lift and aromatic detail. Named for the collegiate church of Saint-Denis de Vergy, which held the land from the eleventh century, it covers just 6.6 hectares, and Domaine Dujac's 1.45 hectares across two parcels make the family one of its principal voices. The house style has been whole-bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts since Jacques Seysses set up in Morey in 1967; sons Jeremy and Alec farm certified organic, with Diana Snowden Seysses in the cellar and considerably less new oak than in the domaine's early years. 2019 was a tiny, sun-drenched vintage, with frost, poor flowering and the record June and July heatwaves cutting yields by a third or more and harvest not starting until mid-September, and the wines came in riper and denser than 2017 while holding onto real tension. Here that concentration gives Clos Saint-Denis unusual depth without blunting its perfume; give it the better part of a decade and it will run for two or three.

There is a highly beguiling texture on the beautifully well-detailed flavors that possess lovely density if not the same sheer scale as the Clos de la Roche though the mouthfeel is clearly finer, all wrapped in an equally sneaky long finish. This is perhaps not quite as structured but at present, the CSD and the CdlR are qualitative equals."

The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, beautifully judged acidity, very refined with a touch of cracked black pepper that enlivens the sustained finish. "The domaine owns two parcels of Clos-St-Denis: 1.1ha down the slope from Ponsot and 0.37ha in the Lieu-dit Calouère. Here, the cold maceration and whole cluster fermentation have produced a wine of immense concentration, with lovely dark fruit character of a floral cast and considerable substance on the palate, which is ripe and weighty, yet still very fresh. This shows superb elegance and breed; discreet, yet absolutely marvellous quality. Drinking Window 2024 - 2049."

More about Domaine Dujac

Even very casual consumers of Burgundy have likely heard of Domaine Dujac, considered one of the very best producers in Morey-Saint-Denis. This is a rather astounding fact given that the Domaine is only 50 years old, a blink in the eye given the region's winemaking history.

When Jacques Seysses purchased the estate of Marcel Graillet in 1967, it was in disrepair and had been selling fruit off in bulk for some years. In less then a decade he had invested heavily in the property and found customers for his domaine bottled wines. The Dujac name begin to be seen at top restaurants in France and beyond.

Fast forward 20 years and you have Jacques' sons, Alec and Jeremy, taking over the reigns of the now expanded Domaine, with holdings in Gevrey, Chambolle, Vosne, Nuits and Puligny. Today Jeremy and his wife Diana Snowden (herself from a prominent wine-making family in Napa) are largely responsible for the operations.

The winemaking has evolved. Jacques was famous for using 100% whole clusters and 100% new oak. Jeremy and Diana are the first to tell you that adaptation is key. The climate is changing dramatically in Burgundy, and every vintage presents new challenges. Stem use is between 20% and 100%, depending on the vintage and the vineyard. Same goes for oak use. On a visit there last spring Jeremy was excited to show us his concrete egg tanks that were aging the Puligny-Montrachets.

All of this is to say that this now storied Domaine is in very good hands as it heads into the future.
