A tiny 1er Cru from a former quarry, made by one of only two owners in the climat. Les Carrières — the name means "the quarries" — is a Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru tucked into a dip that was literally once a stone quarry, sitting at 300 meters on a southeast-facing slope of thin clay over very dense limestone. Domaine Felettig farms a 0.40-hectare slice; Gilbert Felettig is the only one of just two owners to bottle it. Around 2,000 bottles a year, with roughly 80% whole-cluster fermentation and aging in barrel with about half new oak. The wine carries Chambolle's silk with a stony backbone — black cherry, creamy texture, big energy, and a dense, complex finish. A serious 1er Cru, made in serious-people quantities.

"(There are only two owners of Les Carrières and Felettig is the only producer; from a .40 ha parcel; 20% whole cluster). A highly layered nose blends notes of black raspberry, anise and a plethora of floral nuances. There is fine volume to the super-sleek and almost aggressively mineral-driven flavors that also possess a highly sophisticated texture before concluding in an overtly austere and beautifully long finale. This is built-to-age and is a wine that is clearly going to need it." —Allen Meadows

"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru was matured with 30% whole bunch this year. Like other cuvées, there is a veil of reduction on the nose as the wine was due for racking. The palate is much more expressive. With slightly chalky tannins, this is perhaps the edgiest, most livewire of Felettig's Premier Crus. There is wonderful tension with impressive mineralité toward the finish. It might be less approachable once bottled, but I can see this going the distance." —Neal Martin

"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Carrières is strikingly good this year, wafting from the glass with notes of cassis, rose petals, exotic spices and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, sensual and melting, with an enveloping core of fruit, sweet tannins and a long, mouthwateringly mineral finish, it's a terrific effort from this small premier cru next to Gruenchers." —William Kelley
