A rare red from a domaine renowned for whites. Fontaine-Gagnard is one of the great Chassagne-Montrachet addresses, with Bâtard- and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet anchoring its lineup — but the family also tends a few prized parcels of Pinot Noir, and Clos Saint-Jean is the most distinguished of them. The Premier Cru sits on lower-slope sandy soils that historically favored red wine in Chassagne; many of the old vines here are still trained in cordon de royat, slowing ripening and concentrating flavor. 2017 is the classical Côte de Beaune vintage — generous fruit with crisp lift and beautifully integrated tannin. Eight years on, the wine has rounded into its mid-life window, when Chassagne reds traditionally show their juicy, mineral best.
