Vosne 1er Cru from the heart of the village, sitting just below La Tâche. Les Chaumes is one of Vosne-Romanée's most respected premier crus — a generous, sun-warmed parcel that produces wines of perfume and weight rather than razor-edge intensity. Nicole Lamarche took over the domaine from her father François around 2006 (with the domaine officially renamed Nicole Lamarche from the 2018 vintage) and has lifted the estate considerably; the family's crown jewel is La Grande Rue, the iconic monopole Grand Cru wedged between La Tâche and La Romanée-Conti. 2017 was a classical Burgundy vintage — balanced, fresh, not overripe — and eight years on, this Vosne 1er Cru is just easing into its first real drinking window with another decade-plus of upside. The Vosne aromatic signature is unmistakable.

"The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet of crushed strawberry and touches of orange pith, nicely defined if not as vigorous as the 2016. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red cherry and raspberry preserve on the entry, a slight tingle of licked limestone toward the second half and an easygoing but quite persistent finish. Vosne calls for game and a little richness. Roast duck or pheasant, squab with wild mushrooms, beef bourguignon, mushroom-stuffed quail with truffle, or a wedge of aged Comté with walnut bread.

Tasting Profile

Medium to full-bodied and perfumed, with black cherry, rose petal, exotic spice, warm earth, and a savory, almost meaty edge. Tannins ripe and silken, acidity fresh, the finish long and aromatic. Classic Vosne signature.
