Dominique Gallois took over his family's tiny four-hectare Gevrey domaine in 1989 and has built a quiet cult following ever since, working seven appellations from a Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin down through several Premier Crus, all in a restrained, classical style. The Bourgogne Rouge is the gateway, but it carries the house signature: precise, perfumed, transparent Pinot Noir with no makeup. 2020 was a warm but balanced Burgundy vintage with painfully low yields, around 19 hectoliters per hectare, which concentrates everything. Five years on, the wine is just hitting its early stride, red cherry and rose petal on the nose, fine-grained tannins, a sappy mid-palate, and that telltale Cote de Nuits earthiness on the finish. A small-domaine Bourgogne that drinks well above its appellation.
