Here's the pedigree: in the early 1960s, Robert Jayer-Gilles—a second cousin of the legendary Henri Jayer—acquired his parcel of Echezeaux directly from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. The 'du Dessus' on the label marks it as the original, upper heart of this Grand Cru in Flagey-Echezeaux, the part recognized before the vineyard was later expanded. The domaine, imported by Rosenthal, was known for a bold, ambitious style: this Pinot Noir spends 20 months in barrel and is bottled without fining or filtration. The 1990 is a great vintage with decades behind it, fully into its mature, complex stride. This is a collector's bottle—decant carefully and treat it gently.

Wine Spectator

96 points

"An inky-black Pinot Noir, brooding with intensity, bursting with red- and blackberry flavors interwoven with oak-infused spice and mocha. Still very tannic, but give this full-bodied, bold, powerful and complex beauty time to mature and it will drink smoothly.--Pinot Noir Challenge. Best after 2010."
