Xavier Horiot took over the family vineyard in 2011 after an 11-year legal battle. Following cellar renovation (2011-2013) during which grapes were sold, his first bottled vintage was the 2014 Pommard 1er Cru Les Chaponnieres. The ex-fighter pilot brought a different approach to this Côte de Beaune producer, and the result was a wine of fine fruit, subtle savouriness, and remarkable depth—all with the chalky tannins and smooth dry palate that characterize the best of Pommard.

This 100% Pinot Noir shows wild strawberry, pound cake, and wet leather on the nose, with a firm but lower-intensity tannin structure on the palate. At 12 years old, the wine is fully mature and drinking beautifully. Tim Atkin MW picked Horiot as one of the top 10 producers to watch, and this wine shows why. The balance between fruit, earth, and mineral character, the finesse of the tannins, the complexity of the palate—all speak to a winemaker of serious talent. The 1er Cru classification reflects Horiot's careful selection and precise winemaking. A wine for those seeking to discover emerging Burgundian talent.

Focus On: Burgundy

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
everything you need to know about Bourgogne is just a click away!
