Montmains is the Moreau-Naudet premier cru with blue clay worked into the topsoil, and it gives this Chablis a rounder, broader shape than the domaine's stonier sites, without giving up the Kimmeridgian salinity that makes the address worth having. The cuvee draws on three old-vine parcels - Montmains proper, Vieux Moulot and Butteaux - on the slope across the valley from Vaillons. Stephane Moreau built this estate into one of Chablis' elite by outworking everyone in the vineyard, farming organically when very few in Chablis would take the risk; since his early death in 2016 his wife Virginie has kept every detail intact, including the unhurried elevage of 18 to 22 months with long lees contact and only a portion of the juice in older barrels. The 2023 vintage was warm and sunny with a September heat spike, so this is a generous, open-knit Chablis with ripe orchard fruit up front and the mineral cut arriving underneath. In magnum it will evolve more slowly than the 750, which is both an argument for cellaring it a few years and an argument for opening it at a table of six.

The palate is very well balanced with a slightly petrolly reduction on the entry. There's good weight behind that and a potent, spicy finish that lingers in the mouth.
